'I've always been fascinated by what really goes on in the subways,' Neil Patrick Harris tells MTV News of what he'd do first.

"The Smurfs" are three apples high, as the legend goes, and in this week's big-screen adaptation of the beloved children's cartoon, Hollywood takes a stab at re-telling the tale for a new generation of kids.
The 3-D tale (with some CGI) is voiced by an A-list cast, including VMA-nominated Katy Perry, George Lopez and Alan Cumming, to name a few. In the movie, the Smurfs land in the Big Apple, where they end up staying with expecting newlyweds played by Neil Patrick Harris and "Glee" star Jayma Mays. Of course, they're also trying to stay as far as possible from their nemesis, Gargamel, played by Hank Azaria.
The little creatures find themselves in some silly situations as they try to navigate the big city. When MTV News caught up with Harris, Mays and Azaria in New York, we asked what they would do if they suddenly found themselves having to survive the city in Smurf-sized bodies.'
"I've always been fascinated by what really goes on in the subways," Harris said.
His onscreen lady love, Mays, agreed, "That's a good one," before warning him, "but then the rats would be bigger than you. So that'd be a little scary."
"Maybe I'd sneak into really fun buildings," Mays added. "I would get into clubs that won't let me in now."
Harris later quipped of a popular Broadway show, "You could sneak into the 'Book of Mormon.' That's a hard ticket to get right now."
The actor who plays the movie's bumbling bad guy had a less glitzy answer. "If I were three apples high and I lived in New York, I would sneak into the Mets game. That's what I'd do," Azaria said. "And I'm blue, so they'd probably just mistake me for some kind of mascot. I'd wear orange to go with it. You see Gutsy's beard there? It's orange; that's Mets colors right there. I'm sure Gutsy is a Mets fan."

Christina Romer, of UC Berkeley, has been appointed to Chair President Elect Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. Romer wrote, if not the book, at least the chapter for Encyclopedia Britannica, The Great Depression. News of her appointment should make liberals and women who opposed the appointment of Lawrence Summers, who many predicted (including today’s Wall Street Journal) would get this job, somewhat happy, though it looks like Summers will be named White House economic director.
Professor Romer and her husband David were both advisers to the Obama campaign and they hold two seats on the committee which decides when the U.S is officially in a recession.The Romers are macroeconomists, who study the big picture in economics. They’ve also studied the way tax cuts affect the economy and government spending. A UC Berkeley article reported,
What they found about both issues surprised them. Tax cuts provide powerful short-run stimulus to the economy, but there is little evidence that tax cuts restrain government spending.
“It turns out,” Christina explains, “that tax cuts have led, eventually, to tax increases. Basically, something has to give. What we thought gave when you cut taxes was spending, but we seem to find that in postwar U.S. history what actually gives is the tax cut itself. A substantial fraction of a tax cut is typically undone in the subsequent five years.”
The appointment may telegraph Obama’s intentions regarding Fed Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke. Romers wrote a paper, Choosing the Federal Reserve Chair: Lessons from History. Like Bernanke, she has a history of a connection to Princeton University, where she was an assistant professor from 1985-1988.
Romer graduated from College of William and Mary in 1981 and from M.I.T., with a Ph.D., in 1985. In 1994, she co-authored, with her husband, a paper, “What Ends Recessions?”
It’s clear, Obama is appointing someone smart, with strong academic credentials. Unlike Treasury Secretary appointee Geither, who is overflowing with experience, Romer is an academic who’s specialized in “getting” the big picture.

Gaga performed the song twice on Thursday, on 'So You Think You Can Dance' and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

Perhaps it wasn't that big of a secret to begin with, but on Thursday night when Lady Gaga stopped by "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" the singer finally confirmed what everybody already presumed: "You and I" will be her next single from Born This Way.
When asked what she planned to perform that night in addition to "The Edge of Glory," Gaga replied, "I'm going to sing my brand-new single 'You and I.' " She recently shot the video for the track in Nebraska.
Gaga also performed those two tracks on "So You Think You Can Dance" on Thursday night, following her appearance on the show the day before as a guest judge.
Before taking the "Kimmel" stage and pounding the keys on her piano for the track, she joked around with the host about her killer cooking skills, her five Emmy nods for her HBO special and, of course, her nomination for the Bowling Hall of Fame.
"I am a good bowler pre-Budweiser," she laughed. "And then once the beers start loading up, I become worse and worse, which is really great for whoever takes me out on the date, 'cause I'm a good, cheap date and a terrible bowler."
So, does Gaga ever don bowling shoes? "Absolutely not!" she said. "What if one of my fans walked into the bowling alley and saw me in flats? They'd have a heart attack."
When Kimmel asked if one day she planned on actually creating any Little Monsters of her own, the always forthright Gaga shared that she does plan on starting a family someday. "Do I want to have kids? Someday ... long, long day from now," she said. She joked about whether or not she'd love her kids even if they didn't turn out to be gay, telling Kimmel, "No, I actually don't even like you 'cause you're not."
Gaga also just announced the planned release of a coffee-table book, called "Lady Gaga," the photos for which are by fashion photographer Terry Richardson. The book is due out in November.

Yes, a place like this is literally a dying breed, but what might be even more impressive is how a small unhealthy burger shop has grown so well and turned plenty of bad publicity from a nurse’s union into a successful food chain.
The Heart Attack Grill was founded in 2005 by Jon Basso who, although not qualified, calls himself Dr. Jon. He’s even made a few appearances on TV in full ‘Doctor’ get-up waving his fake ‘medical opinion’. But he’s not a real doctor, and his waitresses are not real nurses, although they do dress up like it.
That was the problem for the HAG, because the Arizona Board of Nursing and the Center for Nursing Advocacy launched a lawsuit against the burger joint over their derogatory use of nurses.
After being closed for a brief period, the HAG re-opened fully equipped with disclaimers explaining their staff were not to be confused with real accredited professional nurses. John Stossel and his epic mustache even did a ‘Give Me A Break‘ report on it.
Of course, some people aren’t happy about the tongue-in-cheek approach the HAG takes towards their healthy food. Some people are disgusted that the burgers are called single, double, triple, or even quadruple bypass depending on the number of beef patties. The restaurant also refuses to sell Diet sodas, and instead offers beer, hard liquor, regular soda, unfiltered cigarettes and french fries cooked in pure lard. What’s not to like?
Even Joey Chestnut of Nathan’s Hot Dog eating fame, holds the record for fastest eaten Quadruple Bypass burger on the HAG’s list of ‘Real Men‘.
The Heart Attack Grill is slowly expanding to other locations, but is not ready to call itself a franchise just yet. Check out the website’s News page to see all the international exposure this one restaurant has gotten. French, German and Japanese news channels have all done reports on the place.
Just goes to show that even a little thing like a lawsuit and the least healthy menu possible can’t keep a true businessman from getting some work done. The Heart Attack Grill deserves a salute for its ingenuity and ability to turn bad press into free international publicity.

An Australian teenager has survived two bites from one of the world’s deadliest snakes thanks to the quick thinking of friends who recently completed a first aid course.
It was the second time Ryan Cole, 15, of Mundubbera, about 240 miles northwest of Brisbane, has been bitten by a deadly snake in a year.
Ryan was bitten twice on the foot by a coastal taipan, which has the third most toxic venom of all land snakes, as he jumped into a popular swimming hole in the Burnett River on Sunday, The Courier-Mail reports.
“I’ve been attacked twice and bitten four times ? that’s pretty unlucky,” the recuperating teen said Thursday as he relived the ordeal with his friends.
“But then it is really lucky to have survived. I’m really grateful to my mates that they knew what to do and did it.”
His brother Jakob, 16, and friends Scott Smith, Josh Allen, Lee Carson and Torren Wood heard his call for help and dragged him from the waterhole as he started convulsing and bleeding from the mouth.
Cole was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Sundayt night and spent the next three days in intensive care. He returned home on Wednesday and is recovering slowly. Report - Foxnews

We see a whole lot of Brooklyn Decker's skin and an alien ship, but blink and you'll miss Rihanna.

"Battleship" may be based on a board game, but the action flick's first trailer shows an influence far more cinematic than anything having to do with little plastic pegs and the faux-sinking of tiny seafaring vessels. The new footage, which Yahoo! premiered on Wednesday (July 27), begins like an ode to a "Blue Crush"-ish beach make-out movie, veers into "Armageddon"-esque father-vs.-daughter's-boyfriend antagonism, then explodes in an orgy of a couple dozen alien-invasion movie references.
Totally original, this one ain't. But it's also pretty damn entertaining, and we really are looking forward to checking out the madness when it hits theaters on May 18, 2012. Until then, here are our picks for the five key "Battleship" trailer moments.
Brooklyn, Obviously
One of these days, Brooklyn Decker is going to get a movie role that doesn't require her to parade around a beach in a bikini. Or not. One thing is certain after checking out this footage and taking in her performance, such as it was, in Adam Sandler's "Just Go With It": Decker, the Sports Illustrated model, has been typecast. In "Battleship," she finds herself in the middle of one of cinema's oldest relationship pickles: in love with a bad boy whom her dad can't freaking stand. Clearly the relationship between the boy (a naval officer played by Taylor Kitsch) and the daddy (Liam Neeson's no-nonsense admiral) will factor into the battle with these aliens. Let's just hope it doesn't become the emotional focus.
Don't Tread on Me
Everything in the Navy's military exercises in the big blue ocean seems to be going well until they encounter a hulking contraption submerged in the water. One unlucky dude (Kitsch) is sent out to touch base, literally, with the alien ship, unleashing a whole lot of extraterrestrial terror. The aliens, we'll soon learn, are here to utilize our oceans as a power source. This one shot raises a bunch of questions. Why are the ship's defenses activated by simple touch, rather than the proximity of the Navy? What kind of tech do the aliens possess that they can send a sort of shockwave that hurtles a man so far, so quickly? And what's inside the ship that we don't yet see?
What a Big Bubble You Have!
Speaking of alien weaponry, the ship is capable of unleashing some kind of bubble force field that encompasses an enemy and, so it seems, destroys everything within it. We'll just ignore, for now, how the bubble reminds us of that containment unit in "The Simpsons Movie." Instead, let's concentrate on the alien tech. We're hoping for originality and cool visuals to join forces and deliver us a satisfying early summer movie experience. The bubble, perhaps, is the harbinger of fun, absurd, eye-popping stuff to come.
She Needs an Umbrella
"Battleship" marks Rihanna's big-screen debut. In the trailer, blink and you miss her. But she's there, standing up in a raft and looking wet as the alien craft flies overhead. She certainly looks freaked out. But we can't yet get a sense of her acting chops from this footage; and hey, we might not be able to even after this popcorn flick's credits roll. All we can say for now is she had a blast on the production. "Working with [director] Peter Berg is unbelievable," she told us last fall. "I love doing movies now. It's something I want to do more of. I just want to pick films that are wise for me and roles that I can pull off, nothing that is too big for me."
Taking Flight
We have to say we're surprised how much of the alien ship we get to see in this first trailer. We see how it's a craft that can both plunge into the water and also take flight. We see how it can transform and shift and hover; quite a lot of control, those aliens have on this sucker. We see its cylinder-shaped weaponry. We see the front of the ship almost seems to have a face. So the question is: How much did filmmakers hold back? We haven't, for instance, seen the aliens themselves. With so many alien flicks hitting theaters each year, it's getting harder and harder to surprise audiences with those creatures. Can "Battleship" do it? Stay tuned.

Jeff Monson is either really dumb or really smart. I’m leaning towards the latter. The fighter, who last appeared in the Mixed Fighting Alliance, winning over Ricco Rodriguez in December, has a warrant against him for defacing the Capitol building in Olympia, Wash. This warrant was issued after pictures of him painting an anarchist symbol on the building appeared in ESPN the Magazine. See, Monson is an outspoken anarchist. He has said many times that he wants to do away with the social hierarchies that govern our world. The best way for Monson to share these theories is through the mass media, so publicity is his friend. Is Monson so dumb that he would expect ESPN to not use photographs of him committing a crime? Of course not. This is a man with a Master’s degree in psychology. He understands the ramifications of civil disobedience. If he didn’t want attention brought to his cause, he would have asked ESPN to photograph him sitting at home, enjoying dinner. Monson was charged with first-degree malicious mischief, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of a $20,000 fine and 10 years in prison. ESPN did not do him a favor by running that picture, but it’s not their job to protect athletes. It’s their job to cover them, a fact which Monson has used to make sure that everyone is discussing his cause today.

Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria are proud of their Smurfette's nine VMA nominations.

Katy Perry is making her big-screen debut as the voice of Smurfette in "The Smurfs," out Friday. She brings her kooky cool personality to her role as the sole female in Smurf Village. Her "Smurfs" co-stars were happy to congratulate Perry on another big milestone she will be celebrating four weeks from now, when she'll attend the 2011 VMAs as the most-nominated artist of the year.
"Katy Perry can do no wrong in my book," Neil Patrick Harris gushed to MTV News. "She's tall, she's funny, she can sing and has a sharp wit and is a savvy businesswoman. I say Katy Perry may take over the world. I will be her vice president."
Hank Azaria, who plays bad guy Gargamel in the partially animated, 3-D romp, had similar sentiments for the larger-than-life pop star, though he actually just met her for the first time at the movie's premiere. "Congratulations, Katy Perry/Smurfette," he said, before admitting, "I'm just not up on the young people's music of today. I've heard of her [and] the fact that I know who she is is tremendous, because if I know who she is, and she's a recording artist under the age of 35, that means she's very big."
So, what kind of impression did Perry leave on Azaria? "It was rather exciting," he said. "She's a genuine pop idol; my heart raced. She's beautiful and a huge star."
Perry will be competing for Video of the Year and Best Female Video for "Firework"; Best Pop Video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"; and Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Special Effects for the Floria Sigismondi-directed "E.T.," which features fellow nominee Kanye West. Her "Teenage Dream" clip also nabbed a nomination for Best Cinematography.
