James Whitmore Dies at 87 Photo and Video
Actor James Whitmore, famed for his one-man stage shows and an Oscar-nominated turn as US President Harry Truman, died on Friday at age 87.
Whitmore died at his home in the seaside enclave of Malibu, just northwest of Los Angeles, of lung cancer, with which he was diagnosed in November, according to his son, Steve.
A New York native, Whitmore served in the Marine Corps during World War II and began appearing in stage productions in New Hampshire in the late 1940s.
The bushy-eyebrowed actor made his Broadway debut in Command Decision in 1947, and earned a Tony Award for best performance by a newcomer.
Whitmore picked up an Oscar nomination for a supporting role in his first major movie, the 1949 combat drama Battleground, and an Academy Award nomination as best lead actor for his 1975 portrait of Truman in Give ‘em Hell Harry!
He originated the Truman role in the stage version of that production, one of three solo vehicles during the 1970s that earned him the moniker King of the One Man Show. The two others were the title role in Will Rogers’ USA and as Theodore Roosevelt in Bully.
Whitmore also had a prolific career as a character actor on television, appearing in such series as The Twilight Zone, Rawhide, Dr Kildare and The Detectives.
[ad]
But he was better known to a younger generation of TV viewers as the longtime commercial spokesperson for the plant food brand Miracle-Gro. He also earned an Emmy Award as a guest actor in a drama series for an episode of The Practice.
Among his more notable movie credits were the original Planet of the Apes, as head of the simian assembly, and The Shawshank Redemption, playing an inmate who commits suicide.

Why Did Lady Gaga Go To VMAs As Jo Calderone?
Creative director Laurieann Gibson takes MTV News behind Gaga's 'performance art.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi

When Lady Gaga showed up at the 2011 Video Music Awards, she wasn't Lady Gaga anymore; she was Jo Calderone.
Gaga's creative director, Laurieann Gibson, spoke to MTV News days before the show went live, and she explained why Gaga wanted to stay in character all night long.
"The idea of her being a performance artist -- and it's starting the performance on the red carpet and the idea that the performance never ends for her -- is the first time I've experienced this with an artist," she said. "I love it. That's something that is specific to her, and the whole night was the performance, and it was important that Jo was a part of the whole night."
Gaga -- or, rather, Calderone -- opened the show with a lengthy monologue before launching into Gaga's "Yoü and I." Jo then hung out with Kanye West in the audience, paid tribute to Britney Spears and even shared a kiss with the pop star. Not once did Gaga break character. In Gibson's eyes, this type of performance is groundbreaking.
"I hope that the Monsters and the music industry [connect to] the idea that as long as you execute to the highest level of your ability, that you make a statement, that you push your creative ability to the max, and it doesn't mean one thing or another," she said.
"It could mean standing under one spotlight, it could mean tons of camels and belly-dancing girls. I don't know one is not necessarily better than the other," she continued. "But it is about who's the artist; it belongs to the artist, so in that one moment you have to take it and give all you can. And so I hope people take the fearlessness away [and] the creative notion that we constantly push boundaries, that we're not followers."

Co-star confirms Spider-Man 4 to shoot next year
After all the heat The Dark Knight and Iron Man generated last summer, the Spider-Man brand seems not only to have surrendered its credentials as our biggest comic-to-film franchise but also its place in the public imagination. Iron Man is positioned to take the escapist crown, Batman has the artistic reigns, so where does that leave Spider-Man, which had previously held a viable claim to both?
Of course, creative questions won?t deter Sony, which confirmed last fall that it had director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire on board to make at least two more Spider-Man movies. Although the third film was widely considered a disappointment, it managed the highest international gross of the series?north of $890 million?and for them, that’s the bottom line.
That said, though summer 2011 seemed to be the target for the next movie, there had been little news about actual development. Now series co-star J.K. Simmons, who plays the hyperbolic editor of The Daily Bugle, may have settled some of the doubt. He told MTV at Sundance that he will return and that Raimi wants to shoot the fourth movie next year. There are also rumors the fifth film will shoot concurrently with the fourth, which Simmons didn?t address.
Other questions also remain. Marvel has already staked out the first weekend in May 2011 for The First Avenger: Captain America, which by tradition would belong to Spider-Man. (Marvel also has The Avengers set for July 15, 2011.) Ultimately, with production apparently still more than a year away, it could be some time before this is really cleared up.

'Hunger Games' Director Unpacks VMA Footage
Gary Ross says Jennifer Lawrence will help him give viewers the same 'visceral experience' as the books.
By Eric Ditzian
Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate
While the "Hunger Games" sneak peek lit up the MTV Video Music Awards, on Sunday, director Gary Ross was back in North Carolina, his head space not so much occupied with Lady Gaga in drag and Lil Wayne's long dreads as it was with Katniss Everdeen and the dystopian nation called Panem.
Ross is still in the midst of shooting his adaptation of "The Hunger Games," but last week, with the teaser set to debut at the VMAs, he took the time to touch base with MTV News via Skype to give us his exclusive commentary about the footage.
Katniss Vision
Suzanne Collins' novel is a first-person tale, and it's clear from the teaser Ross is striving to capture that same sort of immediate access into Katniss' head. "I think one of the most important things when you adapt a book like this is to give people the experience they really had when they read it — the same kind of visceral experience they had," he explained. "I think [the reason] everybody felt so strongly in what Suzanne did was that they were with this character, they understood her, they were in her shoes, they were in her head. It was such an intense first-person experience. My job in making a film is first and foremost to reflect that.
"How do we get inside Katniss' head? How do we feel what she's feeling? How do we become her?" Ross continued. "The first thing that allows you to do that is Jennifer Lawrence, because she's such an unbelievable actor. She has so much depth and power and talent and sophistication and sensitivity and subtlety that she's become Katniss Everdeen synonymously. I hope people feel about Jen and Katniss at the end of this three-book cycle the way they feel about Daniel Radcliffe and Harry Potter — that they've become very synonymous with one another."
Get "Hunger Games" experts' analysis of the teaser.
Gale's Voiceover
That voiceover you hear during the trailer? That's Katniss' District 12 pal Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth). And Ross has a very specific idea in mind about the importance of making Gale a part of this initial footage (and not Katniss' Hunger Games companion, Peeta Mellark).
"As everyone knows, Gale is an enormous part of Katniss' life, but he's not as big a part of the first book as he is the subsequent books," the director told us. "I think he's very, very present and he's tremendously important, but of course we shift into the Capitol and then the arena, where Peeta ends up playing a more prominent role. But he's in her head, he's in her life, he's something that echoes with her throughout the games, as any reader of the book knows, so he plays an obviously prominent role."
The Difficulty of the Shoot
Though Ross and his team didn't have to contend with giant fireballs in the woods, as Katniss does in the first book, the filmmaker revealed that the set in the North Carolina forest posed quite a challenge to the production. "This was like shooting in Vietnam," he said. "I felt like I was making 'Apocalypse Now.' The thing was so rigorous. We spent something like six weeks outside in the jungle every day, hiking up and down mountains with cameras and in the mud and in driving rain storms. We all felt it, but nobody felt it as much as Jen did. It's been an intense physical experience for her."
Just Getting Started
While Ross was proud to show off this initial footage, he told us this is only the beginning and that there are a few scenes and characters in particular that he can't wait for people to see in the future. "We're still shooting, so unfortunately, it's just a teaser," he said. "We could only give you a little bit, because we're still down here making the movie. I've got to leave in half an hour and shoot. But there's a lot of things to come that I think are going to be hugely epic and very emotional and incredibly powerful. I think that we've done wonderful things with the mutts. I think that we've done a tremendous job bringing the Capitol to life, and I think that's going to be really, really exciting for people to see. And all the performances! Wait till you see Stanley Tucci do Caesar Flickerman."

Beyonce At VMAs And More Public Baby Reveals
Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez have also taken to live audiences to break the news.
By James Dinh

Beyoncé set Twitter on fire when she hinted on the VMA black carpet that she was set to make a big announcement, placing a hand on her stomach. Speculation turned into overwhelming joy when the pop superstar announced her pregnancy at the end of her "Love on Top" performance by unbuttoning her sparkling blazer and rubbing her noticeable bump.
Bey's public announcement came as a bit of a surprise, given that the songstress usually gets media-shy when asked anything about her personal life during interviews. MTV News reached out to pop-culture expert Rob Shuter, columnist for HuffPost Celebrity, for his thoughts on how she revealed the big news. "I thought it was so brilliant that somebody as private as Beyoncé and Jay-Z would make their own rules to address the fact that she's clearly pregnant," he said.
Shuter explained that the power couple's private nature made the revelation all the more joyous. "I love that this couple who has made it a policy to not talk about their personal life would once again do that, let us in on this huge secret, without ever really uttering any words."
Click for photos of Beyoncé's big VMA night.
Kim Kardashian, a real pro at living publicly, told MTV News that she admired B's choice of venue. "I thought it was really cool of her to come out and show that at the VMAs, 'cause music is her outlet. She could have done it with any magazine or news station, but she chose her home."
Beyoncé is now among the ranks of other starlets who have chosen creative venues to reveal the anticipated news. Take a look at how some other A-list moms revealed their baby bumps:
Britney Spears, 2006
Surprises come by the dozen when we're talking about Britney Spears' life and career, and she had another one up her sleeve when she took to "The Late Show With David Letterman" in May 2006 to confirm her second pregnancy with then-husband Kevin Federline. "Don't worry, Dave. It's not yours," the pop star laughingly told the late-night host after he circled around the question. Spears gave birth to her son Jayden James Federline that September and filed for divorce just two months later.
Jennifer Lopez, 2007
It was only appropriate that J.Lo chose a concert as her venue to announce that she and husband Marc Anthony were having a baby — he was the tour's co-headliner. "We didn't want to say anything before, because we didn't want to take away from the tour, but Marc and I are expecting," the pop star revealed to fans during the Miami stop of her El Cantante Tour. Anthony then turned to his wife, kissed her belly and told the crowd that he "did not expect her to say anything." Lopez gave birth to fraternal twins Emme and Maximilian Muñiz, in early 2008.
Ashlee Simpson, 2008
Ashlee Simpson and then-husband Pete Wentz make our list not because of their announcement but because of their steadfast policy before they made it: deny, deny, deny. Simpson even shied away from the question during an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" as the pregnancy rumors were at their height. "Well, that has been going on for quite a while. That is something that I choose personally not to discuss," Simpson said, before cracking a joke about whether she looks like she can eat "10 cheese burgers or something." Almost a month later, the couple took to FriendsOrEnemies.com to confirm the news, writing, "While many have speculated about this, we wanted to wait until after the first trimester to officially confirm that we are expecting our first child."
Jessica Alba, 2011
Some use their Facebook news feed to talk about work or current events. Some use it to talk with friends. Jessica Alba used it to announce her pregnancy to the world. "It's been a while since I've been on FB & I thought I'd drop by to let you all in on some exciting news>Honor is going to be a Big Sister!" the actress wrote in February. Just a couple weeks ago, Alba gave birth to a baby girl named Haven Garner Warren and, as expected, took to her Facebook profile to announce the news.
Post Your Well Wishes For Jay and Bey on Facebook.
Hilary Duff, 2011
Hilary Duff also favors the Internet for her personal revelations. In celebration of her one-year anniversary to husband Mike Comrie, the starlet offered fans with an extra special blog post. "I can't believe it has already been a year, time really flies when you're having fun!" she wrote on her website in mid-August. "We also want to share the exciting news that ...... BABY MAKES THREE!!!" Since then, the former Disney actress has taken to her Twitter to dish on her many pregnancy cravings: "Today it was rice crispy treats! trying really hard to give them ALL away!!!"

2011 VMAs Pull Largest Audience In MTV History
Sunday's VMA Pre-Show also ranked as the best on record.
By Kara Warner
Thanks to unforgettable performances, a baby announcement and a lady superstar in full drag, among other major highlights, the 2011 MTV VMAs grabbed the biggest audience in the network's history.
In addition to bringing in a record-breaking 12.4 million total viewers, Sunday night's VMAs now rank as the #1 cable telecast of the year among viewers ages 12 to 34, and the #1 non-sports cable telecast of 2011 with total viewers.
"Anything can happen during the VMAs," Video of the Year winner Katy Perry told MTV news. "It's definitely just the funnest awards show of the whole gamut, of all the award shows. The VMAs are like a f---ing monkey out of hell awards show," she laughed. "You just want to watch a spectacle, you want to watch what goes down and I think so many different sparks fly creatively."
On Sunday evening, amid a slew of eye-popping performances, Beyoncé took the stage to perform "Love on Top." But this was no ordinary performance, even for the Queen B: At the end of the song, she revealed her pregnancy by pulling back her sequined jacket as husband Jay-Z cheered from the audience. And the surprises kept coming, from Lady Gaga as male alter ego Jo Calderone presenting Britney Spears with MTV's Vanguard award to Adele's powerful rendition of "Someone Like You". Of course, as hip-hip goes, the unbilled appearance by Kanye West and papa-to-be Jay became one of many dominant VMA night Twitter trends.
The VMA Pre-Show was equally impressive and ranked as the best on record, while MTV Digital saw its highest VMA day ever on Sunday with VMA content attracting 2 million unique visitors, an increase of 33 percent year over year. Additionally, MTV racked up more than 10 million page views on Sunday, up 18 percent year over year. VMA video content generated 2.3 million streams for the day, up a whopping 41percent vs. the day of the 2010 VMAs. It was also the most social VMA day of all time, with social networks driving 76 percent more traffic than a year ago.
A special encore presentation of the telecast airs Monday night (August 29) at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT, followed by the premieres of all-new series "Ridiculousness" at 10 p.m., "Death Valley" at 10:30 p.m. and "Cuff'd" at 11 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Heart Attack Grill Turns Bad Press Into Big Business
The Heart Attack Grill in Arizona sounds like an awesome place. You can get an 8,000-calorie burger for $10 and it’s a restaurant that makes no bones about being politically correct.
Yes, a place like this is literally a dying breed, but what might be even more impressive is how a small unhealthy burger shop has grown so well and turned plenty of bad publicity from a nurse’s union into a successful food chain.
The Heart Attack Grill was founded in 2005 by Jon Basso who, although not qualified, calls himself Dr. Jon. He’s even made a few appearances on TV in full ‘Doctor’ get-up waving his fake ‘medical opinion’. But he’s not a real doctor, and his waitresses are not real nurses, although they do dress up like it.
That was the problem for the HAG, because the Arizona Board of Nursing and the Center for Nursing Advocacy launched a lawsuit against the burger joint over their derogatory use of nurses.
After being closed for a brief period, the HAG re-opened fully equipped with disclaimers explaining their staff were not to be confused with real accredited professional nurses. John Stossel and his epic mustache even did a ‘Give Me A Break‘ report on it.
Of course, some people aren’t happy about the tongue-in-cheek approach the HAG takes towards their healthy food. Some people are disgusted that the burgers are called single, double, triple, or even quadruple bypass depending on the number of beef patties. The restaurant also refuses to sell Diet sodas, and instead offers beer, hard liquor, regular soda, unfiltered cigarettes and french fries cooked in pure lard. What’s not to like?
Even Joey Chestnut of Nathan’s Hot Dog eating fame, holds the record for fastest eaten Quadruple Bypass burger on the HAG’s list of ‘Real Men‘.
The Heart Attack Grill is slowly expanding to other locations, but is not ready to call itself a franchise just yet. Check out the website’s News page to see all the international exposure this one restaurant has gotten. French, German and Japanese news channels have all done reports on the place.
Just goes to show that even a little thing like a lawsuit and the least healthy menu possible can’t keep a true businessman from getting some work done. The Heart Attack Grill deserves a salute for its ingenuity and ability to turn bad press into free international publicity.
Anyone ever been to this place? It looks like heaven. Let us know in the comments section.

Katy Perry, Kanye West Share Best Collaboration VMA
'This is a time when you want to interrupt me, Kanye,' 'E.T.' singer says at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards.

Katy Perry would have gladly let Kanye West interrupt her. The pop singer and VMA royalty's sci-fi-inspired video for "E.T.," which features West, won for Best Collaboration at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, and she happily hugged the Chicago rapper/producer after he waltzed onstage to accept their Moonman.
"Now, this is a time when you want to interrupt me, Kanye," Perry said as she accepted her award. "Oh my goodness, it's nothing like your first time. Your first Moonman, right?"
To this, Kanye — who infamously cut into Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs — corrected her, saying, "No, I have one."
Perry then thanked the video's director, Floria Sigismondi, as well as the pair's fans for granting them the Moonman. Yeezy, who had performed "Otis" with Jay-Z moments earlier, then gave his own obligatory shout-outs. "Thank you to God, Katy Perry for being so brave to let me back on the record, MTV and shout-out to Busta, Chris Brown and Wayne for having that joint right there. I love y'all, and Katy Perry, thank you so much," he said.
Perry's "E.T." clip topped videos from Chris Brown ("Look at Me Now"), Kanye West ("All of the Lights"), Pitbull ("Give Me Everything") and Nicki Minaj ("Moment 4 Life"). Perry topped all VMA nominees with nine nods this year for "E.T.," "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," "Teenage Dream" and "Firework."
"It's always exciting to be a part of the VMAs because there's so much spontaneity," she told MTV News. "I just remember growing up seeing craziness ensued with the VMAs. I wasn't allowed to see it, but I done watched it!"

Beyonce's Baby Bump, Lady Gaga's Jo Calderone Rule 2011 VMAs
Jay-Z and Kanye West's debut Throne performance and Katy Perry's Moonman haul also make a huge impact.
By Ryan J. Downey
Beyoncé on stage at the 2011 VMAs

Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Beyoncé onstage together; Gaga kicking off the show in drag backed by a legendary rock guitarist; Adele pitting a stripped-down stage show against the likes of surprise performers Jay-Z and Kanye West's pyrotechnics; and legendary grunge trio Nirvana were name-checked by Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Chris Brown like it was 1991.
It was, of course, the 2011 VMAs. And women ruled the night.
No award was bigger than the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, given to Britney Spears. "I used to hang posters of her on my wall and touch myself when I was laying in bed," Gaga's Jo Calderone told the crowd before the pair introduced Beyoncé's performance together on the night before MJ's birthday.
Five of the eight televised awards (including, of course, Best Female Video) went to strong females: Video of the Year (Katy Perry), Best Pop Video (Britney), Best Hip-Hop Video (Nicki Minaj), Best Collaboration (Perry, with Kanye) and Best Female Video (Gaga). Best Rock Video went to Foo Fighters, Best Male Video to Justin Bieber and Best New Artist to Tyler, the Creator.
Of course, with all the uniquely thought-provoking, talented and awesome women in attendance, there was one particularly notable absence: Amy Winehouse. Tony Bennett and former VMA host Russell Brand compared the late singer to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday during a moving tribute, which included clips of her singing with Bennett and a performance by Bruno Mars.
The Video Music Awards were back on the West Coast at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles for the second consecutive year. But there was no wisecracking host on hand (last year's show was emceed by Chelsea Handler and past VMAs have often been headlined by comedians like Chris Rock), as producers opted instead to let the music, the presenters and the outfits do the talking.
Gaga was last year's big winner with multiple Moonmen (eight, to be exact) and multiple wardrobe changes as well, including a headline-grabbing dress made of meat. The hashtag #WhatWillGagaWear became the #1 trending topic worldwide before the show.
She did not disappoint.
The "Jo Calderone" alter ego Gaga introduced on the cover of Japanese Vogue opened the show. With a dirty white T-shirt, black pants, boots and a pompadour to make John Travolta's character in "Grease" blush, there was nothing "Lady"- like about Gaga in drag as she took multiple drags from a cigarette.
Calderone tore into Gaga, declaring, "She left me! She said it always starts out good and then the guys -- meaning me, I'm one of the guys -- we get crazy. I did. I got crazy. But she's f---ing crazy too, right?"
The crowd roared continuously as the rant continued. "She gets out of the bed, puts on the heels, she goes into the bathroom, I hear the water go on, she comes out of the bathroom dripping wet, she's still got the heels on. And what's with the hair? At first it was sexy, but now I'm just confused."
The diatribe concluded with Calderone recounting a particularly pointed "conversation" with Gaga. "I want her to be real. But she says, 'Jo, I'm not real. I'm theater. And you and I, this is just rehearsal.' "
With that, Gaga in drag jumped onto a piano bench and started to belt out "Yoü and I." As the beat kicked in, she joined a group of male dancers who were all wearing the same outfit as her. When she introduced legendary Queen guitarist Brian May for the song's solo, the camera cut to a visibly enthusiastic Dave Grohl clapping wildly from his seat in the audience. Gaga cracked open a beer, climbed on top of her piano and sprayed the front row with the alcohol. Britney's mouth was agape during the performance, and Katie Holmes was smiling. Lady Gaga kissed May's cheek before she exited the stage.
Comedic actor Kevin Hart didn't seem sure whether he was hosting, riffing for a long time about the show's lack of a host and making a few cracks at Lil Wayne and the "Jersey Shore" cast's expense and was even more uncertain about what everyone had just seen. "It's starting off weird," he joked of Gaga's performance.
"I didn't know where she was going with it. I didn't know what to think at first. It got a little masculine but then it came around." He asked the crowd to make noise. "Lady Gaga did her damn thing." Video skits that featured Hart alongside Best New Artist nominees like Kreayshawn played throughout the show.
The first Moonman of the night was presented by Nicki Minaj and Jonah Hill, who made hay with his very obvious weight loss and poked fun at fans on Twitter who've speculated his new physique might make him less funny. Minaj practically screamed "Britney Spears!" who collected the award for Best Pop Video.
"I wasn't expecting this," Spears said. She thanked God, her kids, her management, her beau Jason Trawick ("I love you!") and "Till the World Ends" director Ray Kay.
Pyrotechnics introduced surprise performers Jay-Z and Kanye West to the stage as the pair lit their microphones ablaze, trading verses from their landmark collaboration album, Watch the Throne. Jigga wore a much cleaner white T-shirt than Gaga while West was dressed in skintight denim and a matching button-up shirt, with an American-flag bandana in his pocket that matched their backdrop.
Rap gave way to rock as Shawn White joined Miley Cyrus to present the Best Rock Video award to the Foo Fighters. Cyrus professed her love for Nirvana, Joan Jett and Aerosmith just before Grohl -- who was joined by all of his bandmates except Taylor Hawkins -- told the crowd to "Never lose faith in real rock and roll music. Never lose faith in that. You might have to look a little harder, but it's always going to be there." He thanked MTV executive Judy McGrath as well as filmmaker Joel Schumacher, who directed the 1993 film "Falling Down," upon which the winning Foo Fighters clip for "Walk" was based.
Pioneering punk rockers-turned-rappers-turned-multi-instrumentalists brought it all together afterward, albeit in a very different form. The "Beastie Boys from the future," as seen in the recent short film "Fight for Your Right Revisited," dance-battled Odd Future. Will Ferrell (as Mike D), Jack Black (MCA) and Seth Rogen (Ad-Rock) presented the Best Hip-Hop Video Award for "Super Bass" to Nicki Minaj, who called Lil Wayne "the best rapper alive" in her acceptance speech.
Demi Lovato helped give the Best Collaboration award to Katy Perry and Kanye West for "E.T." "Now this is the time where you want to interrupt me, Kanye," Perry joked. West called her "brave" for inviting him on the track despite the controversy that surrounded his famous VMA interruption in 2009.
Paul Rudd and Rick Ross joked about being confused for one another by the public before they introduced a crowd-rousing performance from Pitbull and Ne-Yo, who were joined by a group of burlesque-type dancers and green laser lights to rival any planetarium.
There were no pyrotechnics, laser lights, fog machines, backup dancers or anything else of the sort for the breathtaking performance from Adele, who Katy Perry introduced as "one of my favorite artists." There were no theatrics, save for the acclaimed British singer's powerful voice.
Adele had her hair pulled back and was joined by nothing other than a silhouetted piano player and a microphone atop its stand, with a single spotlight highlighting her frame. She wore an elegant black dress, as if mourning for the broken relationships detailed in her songs.
A commercial break separated the mournful pathos of Adele's intimate tune from the stupefied sexual innuendo of Beavis and Butt-head, who teased their triumphant return to the airwaves due in late October. Nicki Minaj slapped Beavis and Butt-head's skulls together in a segment that mixed live action and animation reminiscent of when David Letterman fought the pair over a burrito at the VMAs back in 1994.
Kim Kardashian restrained herself from flirting with Justin Bieber when she handed him the Moonman for Best Male Video. His screaming fans enacted the "U Smile" title as he climbed the steps to accept. "I just want to say thank you so much not only to God but to Jesus because I wouldn't be here without him. He's really blessed me. He's put me in this position so I want to say thank you so much," he said.
Bieber called himself a "true fan" of all of the other nominees, which included Eminem, Cee Lo Green, Bruno Mars and Kanye West. "I want to share this award with all of them. You guys are amazing."
Chris Brown did some sharing of his own as he offered props to Wu-Tang Clan (with faux martial-arts dancing) and Nirvana (complete with flannel-shirted dancers jumping on trampolines) in the form of brief tributes during his performance of "Beautiful People." Clad in an all-white suit, Brown was backed by several dancers, lip-synching into a headset mic and flying into the air on wires.
Still in drag as her alter ego, Gaga returned to the stage to present Spears with the Vanguard Award. "When you're a struggling artist, literally starving for your dream, you gotta live off inspiration," she began. "One of my biggest inspirations was Britney Spears. Britney taught me how to be fearless."
Kanye grabbed Jay-Z by the shoulders enthusiastically after Beyoncé's performance, which saw the singer dressed in a sparkly purple blazer. Earlier in the night, before the show, Beyoncé beat out both Britney and Gaga in the choreography category thanks to her "Run the World (Girls)" video.
Standing beside Taylor Lautner, Selena Gomez pointed out that the Best New Artist Award had previously been won by folks like Eminem, Alicia Keys, Bieber and, of course, Nirvana. Winner Tyler, the Creator was joined by his crew as he rushed the stage and began an expletive filled acceptance speech.
"Yo, I'm excited as f--- right now. I wanted this sh-- since I was 9," he said. "I'm about to cry."
Young the Giant were also joined by friends on the VMA stage -- 250 of them, to be exact. The Irvine, California, group, which counts legendary singer Morrissey among their fans, played directly to some lucky supporters and were introduced by musician/actor Jared Leto and "Avatar" star Zoe Saldana.
Microphone problems didn't stop Cloris Leachman from trading blue humor with the girls of "Jersey Shore" before they presented the award for Best Female Video to Lady Gaga. "It doesn't matter who you are -- gay, straight, bi, lesbian, transgendered," Gaga, still in drag, declared. "You were born this way."
Russell Brand pointed out that Gaga is among those influenced by Winehouse. "Adele would admit her debt to Amy Winehouse," he said, as the camera cut to the singer nodding her agreement. "[Katy Perry], Florence and the Machine. ... When a talent like Amy Winehouse comes along, it affects everybody."
"The first time I heard Amy Winehouse sing, I thought, 'This isn't just another London chancer.' Not just another person milling about waiting to be famous," he said. A recovering addict himself, Brand made sure to mention that help is available to those suffering from addiction the way Winehouse suffered.
MTV's exclusive first look at the upcoming adaptation of "The Hunger Games" preceded the award for Video of the Year, which was presented by Katie Holmes. "Just like anybody else, when I listen to Katy Perry, I feel fiery and strong," she began. "The Beastie Boys make me want to party. Adele makes me want to kick the guy's ass who broke her heart and tell him never to do that again. Bruno Mars makes me feel romantic. And Tyler, the Creator makes me want to run in the other direction. Fast."
After smooching her husband (and former VMA host) Brand, Katy Perry went out of her way to walk over to Adele before she made it to the stage to accept the award for "Firework."
"I'm very proud of the song and what it stands for. And I feel like I'm doing something right when I sing that song," she said, echoing a familiar sentiment espoused earlier by Gaga about meaning in music.
Lil Wayne closed the festivities in a white T-shirt (a very popular clothing item this year, apparently) and sunglasses after a spirited introduction by Drake. His pants looked to be of black and white leopard print, topped off with a black fedora and ketchup and mustard colored Vans sneakers. He began "How to Love" like a sensitive crooner, talking with the crowd and casually walking to a microphone stand at first.
Naturally, his shirt came off and a band emerged to the riff from Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" as Wayne jumped around screaming "yeah!" and smiling wide. Wayne made his way into the crowd where he chest bumped Rick Ross and other friends. Wayne didn't even attempt to censor any of his lyrics, eventually making his way to a guitar which he threw on the stage after strumming briefly.

Lady Gaga, Beyonce Win Early VMAs
Gaga's 'Born This Way' took home Best Video With a Message early Sunday night.
By Eric Ditzian
Lady Gaga — trailblazer in yet another pop culture realm! The singer's "Born This Way" won the first-ever Moonman for Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday evening.
"I'm really proud of the 'Born This Way' video, and for it to be nominated is an absolute honor," Gaga earlier told MTV News.
The winner of the Best Video With a Message award, devoted to videos where music and social activism unite with positive messages that delve into some of the biggest issues of the day, was announced during the black carpet Pre-Show — just one of a handful of early awards.
Adele won big, taking home three professional awards. She bested Gaga, Katy Perry and Kanye West to win Best Art Direction for "Rolling in the Deep." The Brit chanteuse's video also took Editing (over 'Ye and 30 Seconds to Mars) and Cinematography (over Beyoncé and Eminem). But Beyoncé and Katy didn't head into the Nokia Theatre for the main show empty handed.
Beyoncé nabbed Choreography for "Run the World (Girls)," beating out Gaga's "Judas," Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" and Bruno Mars' "The Lazy Song." Perry, meanwhile, who entered the night as the most-nominated artist, secured Special Effects for "E.T."
"Even teasing people with different images from 'E.T.,' people are so perplexed," Perry told MTV News back in March. "They're like, 'Katy Perry, you're supposed to be Betty Boop! You're supposed to be wearing pink!' It's exciting to be able to push my audience, to be like, 'There's always more, I've got all of this hidden up my sleeve that I've really longed to show people.'"
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Candice Dinsdale suffered in silence when father raped

A rape victim has waived heranonymity to speak of her eight-year ordeal at the hands of her own father.
Candice Dinsdale, now 44, was just six when she was first sexually abused by her father Anthony Allen.
The abuse, which took place at the family home, went on until she was 13. Yesterday as her father was jailed for 11 years, Mrs Dinsdale confessed she was only able to publicly speak out about the horrific abuse after the death of her mother, Patricia, 18 months ago.The mother of one said: ‘I have waited a long time for this day. The abuse stopped a long time ago, but the ghosts of my childhood have haunted me all my life.
‘Many years ago, I was betrayed by the one person I should have trusted the most. I kept putting off telling anybody about what had happened because I was afraid that nobody would believe me.
‘But in the end I felt that the only way I could really move on was to face up to this, and ensure that the person who caused all of my pain would pay. That day has arrived today and now I can look forward to Christmas, and to the future.’
She added: ‘Courage, and strength from my mother, helped me come to the police when I did, and I would hate to think that there are other victims out there who are trying to brush secrets like this under the carpet.
‘I tried to do the same thing and I can tell you now that it doesn’t work. Even though we are going back over 30 years, the police listened to what I had to say and fully investigated my claims.’
At Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester, Allen, 67, of Dukin field, near Manchester, pleaded guilty to rape, indecent assault and gross indecency.
The sexual abuse started at the family home in Dukinfield in 1970, when his daughter was six.
It continued until she ran away from home and her mother eventually uncovered the truth about Allen’s crimes.
But Candice refused to speak out against her father because she did not want to break up the family unit and the matter was brushed under the carpet.
It remained a dark family secret for 30 years until the death of her mother prompted Mrs Dinsdale to report the abuse to the police.
Detective Constable Kath McKenzie, who first interviewed Allen in May 2007, said: ‘Speaking up today is a very brave thing for Candice to do. The fact that it took her so long to report this proves the strength of the spell that this repulsive, abusive bully has had on her.
‘Candice’s whole life has been affected by this terrible story. Hopefully she can now look forward to Christmas, and her future, more positively.’
Mrs Dinsdale, from Tameside, Greater Manchester, said she could never forgive her father for the horror and abuse she suffered at his hands.
She said: ‘He’s an animal. He should have been castrated, not just sent to prison.’
The court heard Allen caused his daughter physical injuries during the rapes but would often pay her money in return for her silence.
The court was also told his daughter had suffered immense psychological harm due to the abuse and had suffered from depression and resorted to self-harming.
Alaric Bassano, prosecuting, said: ‘Not only were these offences committed in breach of the confidence as her father, the defendant tried to secure her silence ? there was an element of grooming ? with cash given to her after the rapes.’
When Mrs Allen eventually discovered the abuse she would sleep in her daughter’s bed to protect her from her own husband.
Sentencing Allen, Judge Jonathan Geake said: ‘You were Candice’s father. You sexually abused her persistently through out her childhood ? from the age of six right through to the age of 13.
‘You deprived her of her childhood and as she says, you ruined her life.’
