David Byrne Gets Charlie Crist Apology on Tape

Nearly a year after David Byrne filed a $1 million lawsuit against then-governor of Florida Charlie Crist for the politician’s unauthorized use of the 1985 Talking Heads song “Road to Nowhere” in a primary campaign ad, the two parties have reached a settlement, and while its financial terms are confidential, one element is not?the apology video that Crist recorded (presumably as a term of the settlement, not, you know, for kicks).

“I was shocked to discover, while working out our settlement, that the use of songs for political ads is pretty rampant,” the media-savvy Byrne’s statement glibly proclaims. “It turns out I am one of the few artists who has the bucks and cojones to challenge such usage.” Other artists without such resources probably appreciate Byrne’s faux-na�vet�, though; after high-profile lawsuits from John Mellencamp, Don Henley, and Jackson Browne apparently had no visible effect on political campaign behavior, Byrne’s likely insistence on this apology video raises the stakes for consequences of future infringement.
