VH1 Wants You To Do Something Awesome Like Jessica Posner

As previously announced, VH1 is airing the Do Something Awards again this summer. For those under 25 who are taking on a problem in the world, there’s still time to submit your application before the March 1 deadline. You may remember the grand prize winner gets 100k towards their cause. Last year’s winner was the amazing Jessica Posner, who co-founded a community center and school for girls in Kibera (Africa’s largest slum). Sad fact: 66% of girls in Kibera trade sex for food as early as age six and only 8% of women ever attend school. Happy fact: Jessica has helped more than 5,700 of Kibera’s residents gain education and employment.
We’ve invited Jessica to share her experiences since winning the award (after the jump). If reading her note doesn’t make you cry and want to change the world, try looking at her pics.

“Winning the Do Something Award quite literally changed my life — and allowed me to do the work that I do on an entirely different level. The DSA gave me, and the work that I do, a national platform allowing us to garner more resources and support than we had dreamed possible. Since winning the award I have received hundreds of emails from enthusiastic people around the world inspired by what we do and wanting to play a role. I was featured on CNN, I have been asked to speak at conferences around the world, and I have been able to make partnerships with people who have contributed in meaningful ways to our success. This has accelerated what we are able to get done! We opened our health clinic — which has now had over 1,500 visits. We added water tanks, which provide hundreds of people with water everyday and we are now in the process of building Kibera’s first water tower that will serve thousands every day. Our students have uniforms, school supplies, and we have added teachers! Soon we will expand the school itself! All of this was made possible by the visibility and vote of confidence that we got from Do Something!”
